Nationally recognized Dentist and certified Prosthodontist Dr. Gordon Krueger, his wife, and the staff from the St. Petersburg, Florida’s leading dentist office all turned out for the annual Oral Cancer Foundation 5K Walk/Run again this year.
Dr. Gordon E. Krueger runs one of the best-known dental practices in the country. A nationally recognized prosthodontist, he is often recommended by many of his colleagues for the restoration and replacement of teeth, and more complex dental procedures. The practice is well-established and performs with the highest proficiency in all areas.
This year, like every year, Dr. Krueger and his wife Amy, who herself is a dental hygienist andan instructor, led their colleagues & students from St. Petersburg College in the annual Oral Cancer Foundation 5K Walk/Run for awareness and fund raising.
Along with other dental practices, local businesses, dental students, supporters and friends, Dr. Krueger’s team made the West Coast Florida April 8th event that had a total of 112 participants a great success. The group encouraged the entire Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg metro to join in the fight against oral cancer by walking, running, cheering and donating to the Oral Cancer Foundation.
To raise awareness, Dr. Krueger’s office participated by contributing to giving away goodie bags, tee-shirts, conducted a raffle on the beautiful Pass-a-Grille Beach, on the Gulf of Mexico. Plenty of spectators got involved in the fun but important event.
Dr. Krueger and his professional staff also conducted free oral cancer screenings, with approximately 50 done that day. They had raffles from local businesses. A total of $7,009 was raised which was an increase of $638 over last year.
Maggie is Dr. Krueger and his wife Amy’s 5-year-old EnglishSheep Dog and participates every year as well.

Close to 49,750 Americans will be diagnosed with oral oropharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 9,750 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 49,750 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years. (Approximately 57%) This is a number which has not significantly improved in decades.
Though most people don’t ever think about oral cancer, the death rate for it is higher than that of cancers which we hear about routinely such as cervical cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, cancer of the testes, and endocrine system cancers such as thyroid.
Risk factors include tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Symptoms include a sore that doesn't heal, a lump, or a white or red patch on the inside of the mouth. Treatment includes surgery and radiation therapy. In some cases, chemotherapy may be needed.
Mouth cancer has a variety of long term effects on people’s lives and patients who have had mouth cancer must be closely monitored to make sure that the cancer does not return. Survival rates have improved over the last 20 years and if cancer is caught early it can be cured. With the right care, cancer patients can have a good quality of life.
